TikTok parent ByteDance is shutting down this service in India – Times of India

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is hitting the stop button on its music streaming service, Resso, in India. According to a report, the app will work in India till the end of January, marking the closure of one of ByteDance‘s last remaining ventures in the country after TikTok‘s ban in 2020.
According to a report by Moneycontrol, the decision came after Resso was removed from Google Play and Apple App Store following an order by the government. The app was taken down from these mobile app marketplaces in mid-December 2023.
However, existing users can still enjoy the service until its final bow on January 31. New subscriptions, however, are locked out which means that people won’t be able to buy new subscriptions either on the app or the website.
What ByteDance has to say
ByteDance confirmed the development, and said that it has no plans to introduce TikTok Music in India, leaving the music streaming landscape in India to established players like Spotify. The company attributed the decision to “local market conditions.”.
“Unfortunately, owing to local market conditions, we can no longer continue to serve users of Resso in India. We have therefore decided to shut down Resso and its associated operations on January 31. Users will be offered a refund of their remaining subscription fees,” a ByteDance spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Famous for the short video app TikTok, ByteDance launched Resso in India, Indonesia and Brazil in March 2020. Just like other music apps, Resso enabled users to stream audio across various genres and languages through free and paid subscription plans.
In May 2023, Resso switched to a subscription-only model, aiming to “elevate the experience” for both fans and artists.
