Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra 2.0 kicks off today, will touch 100 Lok Sabha seats in 15 states | India News – Times of India

IMPHAL: Dispirited by the defeat in Hindi heartland states, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra that Rahul Gandhi will launch from Manipur on Sunday is set to be the last significant Congress bid to reinject enthusiasm among the cadres for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections which will be contested under the shadow of “communal polarization” and PM Narendra Modi‘s personality-driven campaign. The party has invited all the INDIA allies to participate in the yatra which will touch around 100 Lok Sabha seats across 15 states over 6,500 kms.
Congress, on the eve of the launch, however, sought to delink the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra 2.0’ from the elections and said it is against the “anyay kaal” of 10 years of the Modi government.
Faced with an avalanche of questions about its effect on the Lok Sabha polls, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said, “It has no connection with the elections. It is a political party’s ideological yatra; it is not an electoral yatra. We are facing a political force that believes in polarization and which is inflicting economic injustice, social injustice and political injustice. Over two months, Rahul will meet the civil society, hold public meetings, and he will clarify what is Congress vision to provide justice to people on the three fronts of economic equality, social equality and political equality.”
The nuancing, though desperate, appears more for effect, as Congress politics over the last year has revolved around the Kanyakumari-Kashmir Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi. After the 4,000km foot march through 12 states over 145 days brought in crowds, the massive victory in Karnataka in May 2023 was attributed by Congress to Rahul’s padyatra. The party had high hopes from the polls in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and had based their confidence on the “transformative power” of the yatra, but the shock defeat to BJP left it clueless. Still, the victory in Telangana was credited to the yatra.
The east-to-west sequel to the Kanyakumari-Kashmir yatra, given the context of 2024 elections and creation of the INDIA bloc, would seek to create a popular appeal for the party. The choice of Manipur, that too Khongjom war memorial in Thoubal, for the launch is deliberate, as Congress is keen to hold up the state roiled by ethnic conflict for eight months as emblematic of Modi’s “failure”.
