Delhi-Mumbai expressway news: Come March-April, you will be able to take a smooth ride on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway up to Surat from the national capital. The Delhi to Surat stretch of India’s longest expressway is expected to be ready in the coming months. Recently Road Transport and Highways Secretary Anurag Jain said that the Delhi-Mumbai expressway will be completed by December and Delhi-Surat portion by March or April.
Jain said that the Delhi-Surat connectivity via the Delhi-Mumbai expressway is expected to be operational by March, except for a minor section in Rajasthan spanning an 8-kilometer tunnel.For this stretch, commuters can temporarily use an existing road, ensuring seamless connectivity between Delhi and Surat, he said.
The entire Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project is expected to be completed by December 2024. The upcoming Delhi Mumbai Expressway is set to become India’s longest, spanning 1,386 kilometers. This route aims to slash the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12%, condensing it from 1,424 km to 1,242 km, while halving the travel time from a full day to just 12 hours.Traversing six states – Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra – the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will link significant urban centers like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara, and Surat.
Beyond enhancing travel convenience, the Delhi-Mumbai expressway is designed to cater to 93 PM Gati Shakti economic nodes, 13ports, 8 major airports, and 8 multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs). It will also facilitate connections to upcoming greenfield airports like Jewar Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport, and JNPT port.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has set forth plans to construct 50,000 kilometers of high-speed, access-controlled corridors by the year 2047. Anurag Jain highlighted that once constructed, these corridors will notably elevate the average travel speed of trucks from the existing 45 kmph to a range between 75 and 80 kmph along the national highway network.
Jain pointed out that in 2014, the collective length of high-speed corridors stood at 353 kilometers, which has surged significantly to reach 3,913 kilometers in 2023.
