Congress to launch Rahul Gandhi yatra from private ground in Manipur | India News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Congress declined on Friday the conditional permission granted by Manipur’s BJP-led government for Rahul Gandhi‘s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to start from the historic Hapta Kangjeibung ground in Imphal with a limited number of participants.
The party instead chose a private ground, located 34 km away in neighbouring Thoubal district for the January 14 event, albeit without any change in the yatra’s route.
“We were told that not more than 1,000 people will be allowed at Hapta Kangjeibung ground. Late on Thursday, the Thoubal deputy commissioner gave us permission to flag off the yatra from a privately-owned plot at Khongjom,” Congress’ state president Keisham Meghachandra said.
Congress alleged on Wednesday that CM N Biren Singh had turned down its request to use the Imphal ground as the starting point for the march, which will culminate in Mumbai on March 20 after traversing 6,713km across 110 districts of 15 states in 67 days.
Hours later, the Imphal East district administration issued an order granting the party permission to use the ground, subject to limited crowd participation in view of the law-and-order situation. After covering 107km spanning four districts of Manipur on Day 1, the yatra will travel through five districts of neighbouring Nagaland over the next two days before entering Assam, from where it will wind its way into Arunachal Pradesh after eight days. Meghalaya will be the next stop before the march enters West Bengal.
